Chapter 18 Proficiency

A few days have passed since then.

We were just hunting horn rabbits, and my sisters were hunting slimes.

The two of them seemed to have gotten used to it, and were able to defeat slimes with ease.

So I decided to make Horn Rabbit my next goal.

It was one day after a series of days like that.

Lapis spoke to me while I was hunting horn rabbits in the grassland as usual.

"Hey, Zest. Don't you think I've gotten stronger by now?"

"That's right. your level has increased, and I think you've become much stronger than when you first started."

"Hmph! That's right! This is all thanks to you! I'm grateful."

The two are currently at level 4. By the way, I'm level 6.

Although she is still at a beginner level, she is definitely getting stronger.

"So, I think it's time to try defeating other monsters. It's been all about Horn Rabbit..."

Graduating from Slimes and having them hunt Horn Rabbits, but they haven't fought any other monsters yet.

"No good. Let's continue like this for a little while longer. It's still too early to deal with other monsters."

"Is that so? Then I can't help it..."

 Hmm. It's good that they've gained confidence,but...

 It's still dangerous.

"It's true that you guys have become stronger. But we're going to stay as we are for a while."

"I understand. But it's about time I want to fight monsters other than Horn Rabbit."

There's a reason why I'm still having them fight the same monsters...

Oh well. I guess it's time to explain.

Originally, I planned to tell them later, but...

"I understand what you're trying to say, Lapis. But this is necessary."

“Necessary?”

"Yes. There are three reasons for this."

"Three? Can you tell me?"

"Sure. In return, understand it properly, okay? It's very important."

"...!"

The two of them held their breath, waiting for me to continue.

Meanwhile, I scratched my head and decided to speak.

"First of all, it's to get used to the weapon you're currently using."

“So, you mean to use the bow skillfully?

"Something like that. You can't just use weapons blindly. You need to use them properly."

"But, but... I think I've gotten used to it...quite a bit..."

"Then let me ask you, what is the current accuracy rate? Against Horn Rabbit."

"...T-thats.. w-well, it hits reasonably well!"

 Reasonably...Oi...

From what I've seen, it seems like they're missing one out of every three times.

"In that case, it's not good enough. You should be hitting the mark every time, especially against Horn Rabbits."

"W-What...T-That's ridiculous! After all, they move so fast..."

Unlike slimes, which are slow, horn rabbits move fairly quickly.

As expected, it seems like he often misses when the target moves.

“Then at least make sure you can hit nine times out of ten. If you don't have a hit rate like that, there's no point in talking.”

"S-So you want me to improve my accuracy to that extent?"

"That's right. There are plenty of monsters that can move quickly in the future, right? If you're having trouble with an opponent like this, it's pointless."

"I-I see..."

The key for the rear guard is how to increase the hit rate.

Especially since Lapis is trying to protect Finne.

In that case, Lapis needs to follow up so Finne can move safely.

To do that, she need the skill to hit the enemy without fail.

"I understand the first one. What is the second one?"

"Well, that's because you haven't purely mastered your skills."

"Skills? Come to think of it, we haven't learned any other skills yet."

"Me too"

These kids have only learned one initial skill yet.

"Then why don't we learn other skills?"

"It's not that simple. Take a look at the skill tree with your adventurer card."

The two took out their adventurer cards and displayed the skill tree.

"Hmm. There's a skill I haven't learned yet. Shouldn't i just learn those?"

"Look carefully. There shouldn't be anything other than the initial skills displayed from the beginning."

"! Oh, it's true!"

“I don’t have any skills other than the one I saw before…”

Currently, only the initial skills can be learned.

To learn skills, you need to spend SP (Skill Points).

You gain 1 SP every time your level increases. You use these points to learn skills.

This means that there's a limit to the number of skills you can learn.

“How can we learn other skills then?"

"This is the third reason and the most important point."

“What do you mean?”

“If you want to learn other skills, you need to acquire prerequisite skills... and there are other essential elements required besides that. That's called 'proficiency.'"

“Proficiency…?”

"Ah! You mentioned that before, didn't you?"

Finne seems to remember, which is great.

“If you want to unlock learned skills, you need to increase your proficiency level. Proficiency level is set for each weapon, but it's a hidden data."

"Um...do you mean?"

“In short, you need to relentlessly raise your proficiency."

Proficiency is an important element that is directly connected to skill acquisition.

Increasing the proficiency level has the effect of increasing the power and accuracy of the weapon, but the main purpose is to unlock skills.

It's a system where skills become available for learning as you accumulate a certain amount of proficiency.

"How can I increase that level of proficiency?"

"Kill the monster"

"huh?"

"That's why we have no choice but to defeat the monsters. You simply have to defeat as many as possible."

yes. Proficiency is an element that can only be raised by defeating monsters.

Battles with higher-level monsters inevitably take time, so you need to defeat a lot of them.

"I see. So that's why you've been targeting the same monsters all this time."

"You got it? That's why this is the fastest way for you to get stronger."

"I didn't realize you were thinking that deeply..."

"Fighting formidable enemies isn't a bad idea, but to do that, you need to steadily build up your strength."

If you just want to increase your level, you can just hunt monsters that give you high EXP. If you hunt intensively and efficiently, you will quickly reach a high level.

But can you truly become stronger that way? If you ask that question, the answer is... NO.

This is because their level of proficiency has not caught up.

If your proficiency level is low, you will not be able to acquire skills.

If you can't learn skills, you can't become significantly stronger.

What's more, the power and accuracy won't increase much.

In other words, what will happen as a result of such power leveling?

...It's just a wall of flesh.

Well, if that's okay, I won't stop you. If you want to live your whole life as a specialist in hunting small fish, that's fine.

"I was planning to teach you more skills eventually. But if I teach you everything from the start, you probably won't catch up in understanding."

"I-I'm sorry..."

"Well, as long as you understand, it's fine. Then let's continue. We'll hunt some more and then head back."

"yes!"

Actually, there are specifications for proficiency that I haven't told them yet... but it's still too early to tell.

I'll explain it to them later.
